Bonsai Zelkova – Beauty and resilience in miniature

The Zelkova bonsai, also known as the Japanese elm, is one of the most prized bonsais for its elegant shape, hardiness, and adaptability to various climates. Semi-deciduous, this tree is noted for its fine branching, decorative bark, and remarkable ability to thrive both in bright indoor settings and outdoors.

Ideal location: In Mediterranean climates, the Zelkova bonsai can be outdoors in full sun year-round. In areas with cold winters, it may lose its leaves, behaving like a deciduous tree, and resprout vigorously in spring. Indoors, it is recommended to place it next to a bright window. Watering: In summer, it requires abundant and frequent watering, almost daily. In spring and autumn, reduce the frequency. The substrate should be kept moist, but not waterlogged. Pruning and maintenance: Structural pruning: At the beginning of spring, to define its silhouette. Pinching: Throughout the entire growth period (spring and summer), cutting shoots back to 2 leaves to maintain a compact shape. Wiring: It is recommended between spring and summer to shape young branches. Repotting and substrate: Repotting frequency: Every 2 years, ideally at the beginning of spring. Recommended substrate: 100% Akadama or a mix with volcanic gravel for better drainage. Interesting facts: Zelkova wood is famous for its water resistance, traditionally used in the construction of boats and hydraulic structures. Unlike other elms, Zelkova parvifolia is not susceptible to Dutch elm disease, a disease that has decimated populations of European elms. It is ideal for practicing the art of bonsai due to its quick response to pinching and pruning, producing dense branching.
